Dear Christian,

Posted: October 27, 2016 in Uncategorized

I’d like to thank you for sending me that usual list of Bible Verses regarding my sexuality.

I know you probably think I’ve never studied what the Bible says about being gay. Or at least what you THINK it says.

I’m 50. I have been attracted to the same sex all my life, as far back as I can remember, I tried really hard to be attracted to the opposite sex, but you know, it just didn’t happen, I even pretended that I was straight just to stop myself from being beaten up, and to fit in with the “Christian” way. But you know what, it didn’t work. In fact I caused a lot of upset and pain that I would not have caused had I been able to be honest with myself and with everyone from the start.

So those Bible verses you love quoting, do you know what they do to people like me? They make us feel that the Kingdom of God is not a place for LGBT people. That no matter how much I “repent” of being gay, I still am, it could be for me the unforgivable sin. You think that all I am is my sexuality, but that is just a tiny part of my life.

Oh lovely Christian you want to know what I think. I think youve been picking and choosing verses that make you feel better about yourself, you know like “Those who walk in the Lord will renew their strength, they will rise on wings as eagles”, but what do I get? Some stuff about idol worship, a few bits from the law etc. Did you know I was even accused of being involved in the same things that went on in Sodom and Gomorrah. (Those cities apparently were actually destroyed because they refused to welcome strangers, i.e. immigrants, watch out!!).

If I were you I’d stop sending me random Bible verses. Really. I know what the Bible says. I know that every occurrence (all 5!) of same sex “activity” was in the context of abuse. Wether the worship of other Gods, or other things such as child abuse. I would point out that Stephen led a Eunuch to Christ, did you know that in Jesus time gay people were referred to as Eunuchs, Roman Law said that anyone who bought a Eunuch that had genitals had to pay a dowry. Even Jesus spoke about us, and he didn’t say anything more than, “there are some that are born like it, some are made like it by men”. (Check your bible!). He just made  a statement.

I have been on a long and incredibly painful journey. One that you, in your lovely straight world will never have to experience. Surprisingly, I am still following Christ. I know I might not be as good as you at it. But I’m trying my best.

So if you really want to send me verses, try sending me something that will encourage me in my faith and build me up. I am so tired of going through hermeneutics and the original greek and Hebrew context and passages with you.

I am at peace with God, I’m a gay person, I am working out my faith with trembling and fear.

So if you want to talk to me about God please can we talk about something else?

My sexuality is none of your beeswax. Perhaps if you spent some time in my world you would understand just how painful the constant barrage of Christian hate actually is. I live on the edge of the church, waiting for one day, that I will be thrown out because of what I am.

After all, when did you choose to be straight? You didn’t right? You just ARE straight.

So let me deal with my struggles, you deal with yours. You get the plank out of your eye, and I’ll take the building site out of mine.

Have a lovely day.

Love.

Paul (not the apostle, just a failing disciple).

P.S. Did you know that a high percentage of LGBT people are actually very artistic, Michelangelo, remember him? Sistine Chapel. Well that’s the kind of person you’re excluding from your church. Yup, by constantly having a go at people about their sexuality which is nothing to do with you, you are robbing your church of people who could be serving. Just saying.

(This is my 200th post on this blog WOW!) ( and I’m still gay!) (Wow!) Get out the glitter!
